Easy going walk to a lookout over Okupe lagoon and the west coast towards Taranaki.

This is a great half-day option for those with kids or if you’re looking for a gentler gradient. The popular Okupe Valley Loop Track is a 4.8km return walk through regenerating bush and provides fantastic views of the lagoon and northern coast (view west coast).

While you can’t swim in the lagoon, you can get up close to rare kaka, tieke (saddleback) and takahe. Plus you can spot large kereru (wood pigeons) and friendly piwakawaka (fantails).

Ferries depart the mainland in the morning. You’ll arrive at Waiorua where a guide will welcome you with an introductory korero (talk), including island tikanga (etiquette) and the best hikoi (walking) options for your group.

You’ll have 4 hours on the northern end of the island before catching your return ferry back to Paraparaumu Beach.

Okupe Valley Loop Track - all ages

Boulder Bank Loop Track - offseason only

This walk follows the coastline around the boulder bank. This track is closed from October to March (unless with a guide) to avoid disturbing nesting seabirds.
